AFC Wimbledon vs Plymouth ARGYLE-Match Preview

Twenty Fourth in Npower League Two, what else can go wrong for the Pilgrims? Plymouth Argyle will now travel to AFC Wimbledon for a Tuesday evening fixture.

Following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Northampton at Sixfields Stadium, John Sheridan’s Plymouth Argyle face another tough away fixture at The Cherry Red Records Stadium against 21st placed AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday evening.  From the defeat at the weekend Plymouth Argyle slipped to the foot of the table in 24th position, two points from safety.  As for the teams that are surrounding the Pilgrims at the bottom of League Two results went against Plymouth Argyle.  One of the results was Tuesday’s opponents AFC Wimbledon, who picked up all three points after a convincing 1-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge at Victoria Road.  From that victory the Wombles rose to 21st placed in the table.

The last time Plymouth Argyle faced AFC Wimbledon at The Cherry Red Records Stadium known as the Kingsmeadow Stadium was in spring, Tuesday March 6th in Npower League Two, season 2011-12.  From this fixture the Pilgrims came away victorious winning the fixture 2-1. The Argyle goal scorers were Zimbabwe International Onismor Bhasera and Shropshire born Nick Chadwick.  From that evening’s fixture left-back Onismor Bhasera scored Argyle’s fastest away goal in history.  This fixture was also a turning point in the Pilgrims avoiding relegation to the Blue Square Conference Premier as they started the encounter in the bottom two places. This season however both teams have already played each other at Home Park on Saturday 6th October 2012.  The Pilgrims lost this encounter 2-1 after former Pilgrim Rhys Griffiths had equalised. Minutes later in additional time AFC Wimbledon had scored the winning goal from Rashid Yussuff.

After last Saturday’s encounter veteran midfielder Paul Wotton will be aiming to make the starting line-up.  The Plymouth-born returned to Argyle last season after being released by former Pilgrims boss Paul Sturrock in 2008.  After being named in the team sheet for Saturday’s game Wotton made his 467 appearance for his home town side.  From that magnificent achievement he moved up to third alongside Fred Craig on the list of players who have appeared most for the Pilgrims.

John Sheridan will welcome back striker Nick Chadwick from his six match suspension for their visit to The Cherry Red Record Stadium.  Chadwick was sent off when Argyle travelled to Stoke-on-Trent for the game against Port Vale on Saturday 5th January, the day best remembered for Darren Purse signing for Port Vale.  From the red card that he was given, Chadwick had already granted himself with a three match suspension.  The extra three match suspension was handed out to the striker by the football league for an off the ball incident which the referee failed to see moments after kick-off.  John Sheridan will have to wait on the fitness of right-back Durrell Berry. Berry had not been named in the line-up to face Northampton because of a knee injury.  From that the Pilgrims were only to name 6 substitutes on the bench at Sixfields Stadium.  Plymouth Argyle will also be without Warren Feeney, Curtis Nelson and Rene Gilmartin.  These three players are still struggling with ankle ligament, groin and hamstring injuries.

Northampton Town vs Plymouth ARGYLE-Match Preview

Plymouth Argyle will travel to promotion chasing Northampton Town on Saturday as the Pilgrims fight for Npower League Two survival, after their dismal display against Oxford.

Manager John Sheridan’s four game unbeaten run ended at home to Oxford United the previous Saturday, so the squad will be aiming to start the undefeated run over again.  The Pilgrims find themselves placed in 22nd position in the table after the defeat with Saturdays and mid-week fixtures going against the Pilgrims.  With the position that Argyle are in, only goal difference separates the three bottom clubs with Argyle, Accrington Stanley and Argyle’s next opponents on Tuesday evening AFC Wimbledon all located on 32 points.  From last season where Northampton were successful in the relegation battle alongside Plymouth Argyle, the East Midlands club now find themselves pushing for the play-offs or automatic promotion as the Cobblers are situated in 6th position in Npower League Two with an astonishing 52points.

The last time Plymouth Argyle and Northampton played each other in the league was in the early stages of the season on Saturday 1st September 2012.  This fixture was the first victory of the season under former manager and player Carl Fletcher.  From this encounter Northampton took a first half lead with the goal coming from Alex Nichols in the 26minute.  After the break Argyle took a deservedly 3-1 lead with the goals coming from Warren Feeney, Rhys Griffiths and Curtis Nelson.  At full time Argyle won the fixture 3-2 with a late goal coming in the 90minute for Northampton. On the Northampton substitute bench at the time was current Argyle and former Cobblers defender Anthony Charles. The defender left the club by mutual consent after making 10 starts and 1 substitute appearance for Northampton this current season.  Plymouth Argyle’s last trip to Sixfields home of Northampton, in the 2011-12 season, the Pilgrims managed to contribute to a goalless draw which helped them avoid relegation to the Conference Premier.

John Sheridan will take his squad to Northampton on Saturday as he contributes to his second away fixture as being appointed the Plymouth Argyle manager.  After last Saturday’s poor performance against Oxford United at Home Park, Sheridan will be eyeing some vital changes to his side.  One player which could be included in the match day squad will be Argentine forward Andres Gurrieri.  The former Burton Albion player scored a hat-trick in the Semi-Final of the St Luke’s Devon Cup against Witheridge in which the Pilgrims won the game 7-2; this fixture was combined with first team players and apprentices. Goalkeeper and defender Rene Gilmartin and Curtis Nelson are still unavailable for John Sheridan.  The players are still struggling with groin and hamstring injuries. The players who are also unavailable for selection are forwards Warren Feeney and Nick Chadwick.  Northern Ireland striker Feeney is still struggling with ankle ligament damage, whilst for Chadwick, he is serving his last of a six match ban which was given to him for his actions that he submitted to a player against Port Vale.

Available: - Jake Cole, Ollie Chenoweth, Durrell Berry, Jamie Richards, Maxime Blanchard, Guy Branston, Anthony Charles, Onismor Bhasera, Jason Banton, Luke Young, Paul Wotton, Jamie Lowry, Conor Hourihane, Lee Cox, Andres Gurrieri, Jared Sims, Paris Cowan-Hall, Ronan Murray, Isaac Vassell, Matt LeCointe, Ruben Reid, Tyler Harvey, Gozie Ugwu,

Plymouth ARGYLE vs Oxford United-Match Report

John Sheridan’s four match unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday afternoon after James Constable scored the winning goal for Oxford at Home Park as the visitors won 1-0.

After last Saturday’s triumph away at Aldershot Town, John Sheridan had made one change to the side. Sheridan had decided to go for an attacking line-up instead of a defensive line-up, for this he brought in Gozie Ugwu in place of Paul Wotton who was dropped to the substitute bench.  Wotton was joined by six other substitutes including: - Ollie Chenoweth, Andres Gurrieri, Ronan Murray, Luke Young, Maxime Blanchard, and Jamie Richards.  Lee Cox made his home debut at Home Park after signing on loan from Swindon last Friday.  Cox played against his former team-mates on Saturday after he had a loan stint at Oxford earlier in the season.  As for the visiting team Oxford United there manager Chris Wilder made two changes to the side that lost 2-1 at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday Evening.  Both Alfie Potter and Dean Smalley made way for Striker Tom Craddock and midfielder Josh Parker.  Home Park welcomed back former Argyle player and most recent Oxford goalkeeper Luke McCormick after he has had a spell out of professional football.

The first half started very positive for the visitors Oxford United as Plymouth Argyle’s captain Conor Hourihane started the encounter from the centre circle.  Argyle could never get going in the first half as the visitors Oxford United were in total control of the Npower League Two fixture.  From the start of the meeting Plymouth Argyle were outrun in the midfield with Paris Cowan-Hall, Lee Cox, Conor Hourihane and Jason Banton getting no time on the ball at any time.  In the 16th minute of the first half the visitors had taken a well-deserved lead in front of the Devonport End.  United’s number 9 James Constable had side footed in from close range after a low cross from Damien Batt who claimed the ball from a mistaken pass from left back Onismor Bhasera. If Constable had let Damien Batt’s cross roll across the penalty area the shot would have in fact gone wide of Jake Cole’s goal.  From the goal that Oxford had scored it gave them confidence.  They were in control of the game and were passing the football around comfortably through the defence, midfield and strikers.  Midway through the first half Conor Hourihane had to chance his match day shirt after a bang on the head.  The blood was caused from a high boot inside Oxford’s half.  The visiting team had nearly made it 2-0 from a counter attack.  James Constable had made space and run down the right wing.  With only Zimbabwe international Onismor Bhasera in the defensive position he had a lot of covering to do with two other United players joining Constable in the attack.  Excellent defending from Bhasera denied the two players tap ins after he had made contact with the ball and deflected in out for a corner.  From the resulting corner experienced centre back Guy Branston was down on the ground injured in the penalty area.  It had appeared that Branston had been elbowed by an opposition player but the referee did not have the same opinion on the incident. With 10minutes remaining on the clock for the first half Argyle got into the game more after not testing Luke McCormick in goal.  Jason Banton had run with aggression and speed down the left wing into the penalty box.  A powerful low shot was nearly goal bound but from an outstanding save from McCormick denied the Palace loanee his third goal in three games for Plymouth Argyle. In the final minutes of the first half Argyle were awarded two corners in quick succession, the corners were well defended by Oxford and were cleared.  Half Time Argyle 0-1 Oxford.

Second half came around very quickly for Argyle who were shooting towards the Devonport End.  Oxford appeared out of the tunnel first with fans applauding former Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick as he took he’s place in goal in front of the Devonport.  From the start of this half Plymouth Argyle looked more like a football team equalling up to and pressuring the players from Oxford to make mistakes.  There was real urgently in Argyles play as they passed it around the field of play.  Making his full debut Gozie Ugwu had nearly added a goal to his name after holding off Captain Jake Wright and shooting wide of the post.  Minutes later Durrell Berry had nearly granted Oxford a second goal, after a sloppy back pass to goalkeeper Jake Cole, Tom Craddock had the easy of chances to score, but fortunately for Argyle, Cole stood tall and saved from Craddock’s low shot.  Argyle had another chance to equalise with Rueben Reid; he had a looping header cleared of the line by Jake Wright.  The first and only substitution that John Sheridan made was to bring on Ronan Murray in favour of Gozie Ugwu in the 69minute.  A straight swap for Argyle.  A controversial moment in the fixture came near the end of the 90minutes.  Central defender Guy Branston headed clear, the clearance landed on top of the goal net and rebounded back into the field of play.  From this Oxford had scored a second goal.  From confirmation that the goal stood, Jake Cole rushed towards the linesmen followed by his teammates to contest about the goal.  After long consideration from the referee and linesmen the goal was rightly disallowed as the football had already gone out of play before the goal had reached the back of the net.

Plymouth Argyle had lost for the first time since John Sheridan came to the club; a James Constable goal had earned the visitors all three points.

Plymouth ARGYLE vs Oxford United-Match Preview

Plymouth Argyle will return to Home Park on Saturday after their victory away at relegation rivals Aldershot Town last Saturday.

John Sheridan’s men will now welcome Oxford United to the theatre of greens for the Npower League Two encounter on Saturday. Since the arrival of Sheridan the Pilgrims are beginning to pick up valuable points home and away to avoid relegation to the Conference Premier, with the most recent success coming on their travels away at Aldershot. Argyle are unbeaten for four games with an outcome of two draw and two victories picking up eight points out of a possible 12.

The last time both met was on a cold Tuesday evening on 4th December 2012 in the Johnstone Paint Trophy.  The outcome of the fixture was a 1-1 draw.  As the fixture had to be settled on the evening, the game went straight to penalties with Oxford coming out victorious and progressing to the next round of the cup.   The last time Argyle and Oxford encountered either other in the league was on Saturday 25th August 2012.  The outcome of this fixture was a victory for United at the Kassam Stadium after they won 2-1; the constellation goal was from a free-kick from Robbie Williams. The previous meeting between the Pilgrims and United in the league was last season, the 2011-12 season.  That contest was very important for everyone connected to Argyle as a draw was enough to keep the Pilgrims in the league. The full result was in Argyle’s favour as the Pilgrims had drawn 1-1.

There will be a familiar face returning to Home Park on Saturday when Plymouth Argyle face Oxford United.  Formally of the Pilgrims Luke McCormick has returned to Professional football after he signed from Truro City in the January transfer window.  The goalkeeper has been absent from football after he had his contract terminated by Plymouth Argyle in 2008. After being released in the summer of 2012 on good behaviour he went on trial at Swindon Town.  After Swindon didn’t offer him a permanent contract he signed for Truro City on non-contract terms in November 2012.  When making 11 appearances for the Cornwall side he re-joined league football after an absence of four and a half years.   Oxford United came in for McCormick after their first team goalkeeper was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Sheridan’s latest signing Lee Cox will be aiming to making his home debut for Argyle after he signed on loan from Swindon Town last Friday.  If he is to make an appearance in Saturday’s fixture he will be playing against his former team mates after he spent the first half of the season on loan to Oxford.  Both Rene Gilmartin and Curtis Nelson will still be unavailable to face Oxford at Home Park due to Hamstring and Groin Injuries.  Striker Nick Chadwick will also be missing the encounter as he servers his fifth match ban after he was given a sixth match suspension. Gozie Ugwu will be targeting to make the starting 11 at Home Park.  He has been absent since his arrival to Home Park through injury.

Aldershot Town vs Plymouth ARGYLE - Match Preview

Plymouth Argyle’s manager John Sheridan will take his squad to Aldershot on Saturday for his first away game since being appointed as the Plymouth Argyle manager.

Since Sheridan was appointed as the manager, the Pilgrims have experienced three home games in a row at Home Park, after the game at Roots Hall home of Southend United was postponed due to a frozen pitch.  From the three home games Argyle have picked up 5points out of a possible 9 with the victory coming over Morecambe and with both goalless draws coming at home to Accrington Stanley and Dagenham & Redbridge.

The last time Plymouth Argyle visited The EBB Stadium was December 31st    2011 in where the score was held at 0-0.  On this day Jake Cole saved a penalty to keep the scores level and earn a vital point in keeping the greens a float in Npower League Two.  Dean Holdsworth side will be playing Argyle for the third time this season when both sides face each other on Saturday.  Aldershot’s first visit to Home Park came in a 2-0 victory for the visitors on Saturday 18th August 2012 in Npower League Two.  There second visit to Plymouth was in the Johnstone Paint Trophy where Argyle were 2-1 winners to progress to the next round on Tuesday 9th October 2012.

John Sheridan has today Friday 8th    signed a midfielder from Swindon Town.  Lee Cox will join the Pilgrims on an emergency loan deal until the end of the current season which concludes on Saturday 27th April 2013.  The 22 year old will come straight into the side to face Aldershot on Saturday.  Gozie Ugwu is ready to make his long awaiting Argyle debut after recovering from an ankle injury, which has kept him out of the squad since his arrival to Home Park.  Curtis Nelson is still absent for Argyle through an on-going groin injury. Plymouth ARGYLE vs Dagenham & Redbridge-Match Report

Plymouth ARGYLE 0

Dagenham & Redbridge 0

Plymouth Argyle move out of the Npower League Two relegation zone on goal difference with a goalless draw at Home Park against Dagenham & Redbridge.

After last Saturdays goalless draw, home to Accrington Stanley John Sheridan had made three changes to his side that started the game.  Jake Cole came into the side, through Rene Gilmartin recovering from the hamstring injury that he had picked up minutes from half time last Saturday.  Also missing from the game was centre-back Curtis Nelson, the Stoke born was ruled out of the game through a groin injury that has been troubling him in recent weeks.  From Nelson’s absence Anthony Charles moved to centre-back alongside Guy Branston, this meant that Onismor Bhasera moved to left-back.  Sheridan also re-called Luke Young to the side, alongside, Captain Conor Hourihane, after he put in a magnificent display when he came on as a substitute last Saturday.  The manager gave Jason Banton his debut in a green shirt after he arrived at Home Park on Thursday on loan from Crystal Palace.   There was also a re-call to England under 18’s striker Matt LeCointe.  Matt was placed on the Substitute bench alongside: - Ollie Chenoweth, Maxime Blanchard, Paul Wotton, Jamie Lowry, Andres Gurrieri and Tyler Harvey.    However the visiting team’s manager John Still made one change to the Dagenham & Redbridge team that lost 2-1 at home to Morecambe.  Ben Strevens had replaced Jake Reed in the 4-3-3 formation that the Daggers had played.

On a Winter’s Saturday afternoon the sun was shining, the players walked out onto the green, green grass applauding the fans situated in the stadium.  Birthday-boy Captain Conor Hourihane’s side kicked of the first half with the players attacking the Devonport.  In all three consecutive home games Plymouth Argyle have attacked the Devonport in the first 45minutes.  The visiting team started very brightly at the start of the first half testing the Argyle defence and Goalkeeper Jake Cole early on.  All four defenders were defending gracefully and solidly throughout the first 45.   There first half chance came when Luke Howell headed wide after a Femi IIesanmi had delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area.  From this miss it was a let of for the Argyle defence after Howell was left un-marked in the penalty area.  Another player grateful that this opportunity did go wide was goalkeeper Jake Cole, Cole was not going to be able to save it as he was flat footed in the middle of the goal mouth.  A golden chance for Argyle to go ahead was presented to second time Pilgrim Reuben Reid.    Half way through the first half Luke Young over kicked his cross, but fortunately Paris Cowan-Hall came to the rescue, not letting the ball go out for a Dagenham throwing, he then fired in a low cross catching everyone out, but not Reuben Reid, he clip just avoiding the far post and went narrowly wide of the far post, in front of the Devonport. Dagenham & Redbridge were going for an opening goal; their chances were from corner after corner.  Each corner was met with a Guy Branston thunder bolt header to clear the danger from the goal where Jake Cole was situated in.  After successive corners Durrell Berry had finally cleared all the threat that Dagenham had caused, from his clearance he found Ipswich loanee Ronan Murray down the right wing.  From the strikers presence it forced the defender to kick it out for a throwing.  This throwing from right back Durrell Berry presented Luke Young a glorious chance to score the opening goal of the game.  The defenders cleared the ball, the ball feel straight to midfielder Luke Young; he volleyed and didn’t connect with the ball properly, this only meant that the volleyed shot went high and wide of the ball, in fact this shot impressed everyone by going out of the ground and over the over side of the Devonport.  So another opportunity came Argyles way this time it was Ronan Murrays chance to shoot.  From a Guy Branston cross Murray was first to react and fired the ball onto the cross-bar.  After an additional minute of added time referee Steve Martin blew for half time.

Second half came round swiftly with both teams emerging from the tunnel at the same time with Dagenham & Redbridge leading the way onto the field of play.  The visiting team kicked of the second half with them the same way as the start of the first half.  22 today Conor Hourihane picked the ball up from an outstanding pass from Zimbabwe International player Onismor Bhasera, running with freedom and determination, Hourihane looked as if he was about to score when he was halfway round the goalkeeper; Chris Lewington.  A low shoot towards the Barn Park End goal was saved comfortably by the visiting team’s goalkeeper.  This half Reuben Reid had every much improved his game; holding the ball up extremely well blocking off defenders until his teammates had joined him in the Argyle attack.  Argyle continued to take the game to Dagenham & Redbridge with several openings falling the way of the men in green.  Conor Hourihane had another chance with Onismor Bhasera threading through the ball to the young captain, once again Lewington saved well from the Irish man’s shot.  Following that opening after was on top.  A corner from Ronan Murray attracted the head of Reuben Reid.  Chris Lewington was nowhere to be seen in the goal, and this was a definite goal until Femi IIesanmi came to the Daggers rescue and headed it off the goal line.  both wingers Paris Cowan-Hall and debutant Jason Banton looked very lively when they had the ball forcing problems for the defence.  Andres Gurrieri was introduced on 78minutes replacing Jason Banton on the left wing.  Andres Gurrieri was looking to impress John Sheridan; he’s first involvement in a game since Sheridan’s arrival to Plymouth, as so he did by doing what he does best running at defenders and attacking the ball.  Within minutes of each other former Ivybridge Community College students Matt LeCointe and Tyler Harvey were introduced nto the game replacing Ronan Murray and Reuben Reid.  From the pairs presence Argyle were able to exploit in the pace that the two young professionals have.  For the last 10minutes including additional time Argyle were passing the ball rapidly and carefully but were unable to create an opening towards goal.  Full Time Argyle 0-0 Daggers.

John Sheridan’s unbeaten run continues as Plymouth Argyle manager with Argyle picking up 5points out of a possible 9 in three games.  From these games the Pilgrims have also kept two clean sheets.

Argyle (4-4-2): 1 Jake Cole; 2 Durrell Berry, 26 Anthony Charles, 5 Guy Branston, 14 Onismor Bhasera; 7 Paris Cowan-Hall, 8 Luke Young, 6 Conor Hourihane, 19 Jason Banton (27 Andres Gurrieri 78); 28 Ronan Murray (21 Matt Lecointe 80), 24 Reuben Reid (29 Tyler Harvey 85). Plymouth ARGYLE vs Dagenham & Redbridge-Match Preview

Plymouth Argyle will return to the Home Park playing field on Saturday when they face 15th place Dagenham & Redbridge, who have lost their last two matches.

With the January Transfer Window closing at 11pm on Thursday evening there were a lot of ins and outs at Plymouth Argyle throughout January.  Both Robbie Williams and Rhys Griffiths had their contracts terminated by mutual consent to peruse first time football elsewhere.  Attacking midfielder Joe Lennox was also released by the Devon club after John Sheridan decided on not offering the Bristol Born a new contract after his previous one ran out on 31st January.  Joe will be best remembered for equalising goal at St James Park with a spectacular shot.  John Sheridan was able to make one more signing before the window closed.  Crystal Palace midfielder Jason Banton joined Argyle on a one month loan deal on Thursday and will be available up to and including the Barnet game on Saturday 2nd March.    During January there was much talk of League One and Two clubs interested in Zimbabwe International Onismor Bhasera.  Fortunately the former Kaiser Chiefs defender remains at Home Park much of the relief from the green army.

The last time the two teams met was in 2012 on August 2nd.  In this game at the The L.B. Barking & Dagenham Stadium both teams thought out a very hard earned 0-0 draw, which was watched by Olympian Argyle fan Greg Searle.  From the team that former Argyle manager Carl Fletcher named, present manager John Sheridan will be naming a totally different team with only a couple of players that played in the draw that day, will be named in the side to face the Daggers at Home Park.  Dagenham & Redbridge’s last visit to Home Park also produced a goalless draw. With the team eager to pick up a massive three points, on Saturday afternoon, John Sheridan will be looking to create an attacking style in the team.

John Still’s Dagenham & Redbridge will be looking to get back to winning ways against Argyle at Home Park after they have lost two games on a bounce.  There last defeat came last Saturday at home to Morecambe where they lost 2-1 to the Shrimps.  The Daggers last victory came on 12th January where they defeated Rochdale 2-1 at The L.B. Barking & Dagenham Stadium.

Nick Chadwick, Warren Feeney and Gozie Ugwu will all be unavailable for Saturdays Npower League Two’s encounter against Dagenham & Redbridge.  Nick Chadwick will be serving his third match ban after the striker was handed a six match suspension from his actions that he took when Argyle visited Port Vale.  The other two absentees will be Warren Feeney and Gozie Ugwu.  These two players are currently unavailable due to ankle injuries that they picked up.  The Reading loanee picked up the injury in the last few moments of last Friday’s training session, whilst International striker Warren Feeney injured his ankle in the first few minutes of the victory over Morecambe.  John Sheridan’s transfer deadline signing Jason Banton will be looking to go straight into the starting line-up after he arrived on-loan from Crystal Palace on Thursday afternoon.   Sheridan will also be without goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin; he picked up a hamstring injury in the closing stages of the first half last Saturday. From this it will give Jake Cole the opportunity to impress John Sheridan as he has been a substitute goalkeeper since Rene Gilmartin took over in goal on Saturday 10th November 2012 in the 2-2 draw against Gillingham.
