Rotherham United vs Plymouth Argyle - Match Preview

Plymouth Argyle will make the long trip up to Yorkshire today, Saturday 27th October, when manager Carl Fletcher and his team will come across one former green when they take on Rotherham United. Kari Arnason who spent two enjoyable years in Plymouth departed Home Park when the club was in financial crisis and also in administration.  The administrator sacked him effectively after he refused to sign a deed of deferral over unpaid wages in June 2011. The Icelandic International, one of Carl Fletcher’s favourite teammates moved to Rotherham after sending last season in Scotland with Aberdeen teaming up with many former Pilgrims at Pittodrie

A run of three straight wins on the bounce in league and cup games ended on Tuesday evening after a 2-1 defeat in Gloucester against a strong Cheltenham Town side.  A superb turnout of 650 supporters of the green army was to witness an outstanding display from Argyle which they deserved to get something out of the game.  From the game Conor Hourihane was to pick up his fifth yellow card of the season.  This means that he is suspended for this Npower league 2 encounter with Rotherham United at The New York Stadium.  This may mean that Cornishman Jamie Lowry will make his long awaited league debut for Plymouth Argyle.  Jamie was released by Chesterfield at the end of last season.  The Newquay born player has not played for Argyle since injuring his ankle when the Pilgrims played Truro City in a pre-season game at Treyew Road in July. Versatile player Onismor Bhasera will also be looking to make it back into the squad to face Rotherham.  The Zimbabwe player has missed the last couple of weeks due to injury and international commitments.  Another key player Andres Gurrieri will be looking to have secured his place in the starting 11 after putting in magnificent displays against Rochdale and Cheltenham.

Plymouth Argyle: Jake Cole, Rene Gilmartin, Ollie Chenoweth, Durrell Berry, Darren Purse, Maxime Blanchard, Curtis Nelson, Jamie Richards, Scott Griffiths, Jamie Lowry, Joe Lennox, Luke Young, Onismor Bhasera, Andres Gurrieri, Warren Feeney, Guy Madjo, Alex MacDonald, Nick Chadwick, Jared Sims, Jordan Copp, Tyler Harvey, Matt Lecointe.

Doubtful: Rhys Griffiths (Groin Injury), Paris Cowan-Hall (dead leg),

Unavailable:  Conor Hourihane (suspended), Paul Wotton (back injury), Ross Jenkins (groin injury), Robbie Williams (stomach muscle injury), Jed Harper-Penman and Isaac Vassell (both on loan to Bideford Town)

Plymouth Argyle vs Rochdale - Match Report

Argyle 3
Madjo pen 4, pen 90, Gurrieri 7

Rochdale 1
Adebola 76

An excellent display from Plymouth Argyle earned themselves a third consecutive win in all competitions when they took on Rochdale at home in Npower league 2.  It was there second win in a row for the Pilgrims at Home Park with the first one coming against Aldershot Town in the Johnstone Paint Trophy.

Two Guy Madjo’s penalty’s at each end of each half helped Argyle to a deservedly 3-1 victory over the Lancashire Club.

After last Saturdays 4-1 victory at Underhill manager Carl Fletcher had made one change to the side.  Midfielder Andres Gurrieri was brought into the side after summer signing Rhys Griffiths was left out of the match day squad as of a minor injury to his groin. Argyle were going into the game with a foemation standing at 4-5-1.  As of Rochdale there were two changes to the side who lost 2-1 to Morecombe last Saturday.  Former Pilgrim Georgie Donnelly was dropped to the bench in favor of Jason Kennedy.  The other change to the side was Bobby Grant replacing Joe Rafferty.  Grant was making his comeback after serving a three match ban.

Argyle were full of confidence going into the game, and that showed after the Pilgrims got off the mark early on, a repeat of last Saturday away at Barnet. Referee Gary Sutton had awarded the greens a penalty inside 5minutes after Ryan Edwards had handled the ball after left back Scott Griffiths hand put in a low cross for Andres Gurrireri.  On loan striker Guy Madjo was ready and raring to take the penalty in front of the Devonport End.  The striker calming slipped in inside the far post. 1-0 to Argyle. Minutes later the Pilgrims were further ahead when Andres Gurrieri had headed in Paris Cowan Hall’s inviting cross which he dispatched into the far corner of the goal.  This would be Andres second goal in two starts after his first goal in England came against Aldershot.  Even when the Lancashire club were getting the ball and passing it around the field, the Argyle players were shutting them down immediately, whilst forcing the opposite players into their own half. Argyle should have been 3nil up at own point but to an outstanding save by Rochdale’s Josh Lillis denied Guy Madjo.  Again the provider Paris Cowan Hall had fired in a delightful cross onto the Cameroonians head.  From around 5yards from goal the green army were ready and willing to celebrate but from a reflex save the fans were left seated.   Another fine save from Rochdales number 1 prevented both Andres Gurrieri and Paris Cowan Hall, after the Argentinian had forced a save form Lillis with the former Woking player shot being deflected out for a corner. With Rochdale never coming close to scoring, they nearly did after Dele Adebola’s lopping header going across Jake Cole goal, hitting the post and fortunately going out for a goal kick to Argyle.  The forth official had issued a minimum 2minutes added time onto the 45 after the 2goals from Guy Madjo and Andres Gurrieri early on in the first half.  The referee had blown the first half whilst with Darren Purse side going into the break 2-0 to the good.

Both teams emerged for the second half with Argyle exercising with their new look warm up with Kevin Nacekivell.  The Pilgrims were forced into an early substitution after Paris Cowan-Hall was replaced by Joe Lennox.  Cowan-Hall never looked right after coming out of the tunnel for the second half.  It had appeared after the game that he was forced off with a dead led.  Manager Fletcher has deemed that the injury isn’t too bad, and should be available for the trip to Cheltenham, Gloucester on Tuesday Evening kick-off 7:45pm.  On the 55minutes Rochdale were awarded a very soft penalty after it had appeared Jason Kennedy had fallen over Maxime Blanchard’s head.  Jake Cole had saved the penalty after Bobby Grant side footed his attempted straight at Cole.  With the Devonport Chanting ‘There’s only one Jake Cole’.  It was still 2-0 to Argyle. You could tell Rochdale had a telling of at half time as they were trying their best to grab a goal back.  Rochdale had brought on former Pilgrim George Donnelly and Joel Logan to increase their attacking options. However the substitutions did work after Joel Logan invited a foul.  From that free kick Rochdale were back into the game after Dele Adebola had headed in from the delivery in the 76th minute.  From Carl Fletchers reaction on awarding the free kick he wasn’t very happy as an understandment with the 32 year old kicking a water bottle down the touchline.  That incident from Carl Fletcher was seemed to by the forth official that had a little word with the manager.  In the game the forth official was up and down like a yo! yo! to the home dug out telling Fletcher to calm down after decision went the opposite way. From the Rochdales goal it proved to be a tense ending to the game with Dale pushing to get the equalizer.  Free kicks were the threat from Rochdale after Hourihane, Gurrieri and Young were eager to get the ball up field but from this they ended up fouling the opposition players.  For more cover at the back Fletcher went for the save option by bringing on Centre back Curtis Nelson for goal scorer Andres Gurrieri in the 90th minute.  The forth official had issused 4minutes of added time with Rochdale still pushing to grab a late equalizer.  That was not going to happen after Gary Sutton awarded Argyle their second penalty of the game after Joe Lennox was fouled by Ryan Edwards in the box after he had made one of his steamy runs into the box. Guy Madjo was the first one to grab the football to take the penalty and so he did.  The striker fired it into the top corner, no chance for the goalkeeper.  The referee had bloom his whistle. Plymouth Argyle had won the game 3-1 after goal from Guy Madjo and Andres Gurrieri.

Barnet vs Plymouth Argyle - Match Report

All change? Barnet went behind after just two minutes of the match
Barnet 1
Stephens 16
Argyle 4
Griffiths 2
Blanchard 11
Cowan-Hall 62
Young 90

Once Edgar Davids, a former Holland International had joined Barnet’s backroom team as a player-coach, all the media attention was on him. Argyle were looking to turn that around and so they did from demolishing the Bees 4-1 at Underhill, London.
From midweeks win in the Johnstone Paint Trophy manager Carl Fletcher decided to make six changes to the squad.  Firstly Jake Cole returned in-between the posts, a familiar place for the number 1 who spent three year playing for the Bees at Underhill. Also recalled to the squad were defenders Darren Purse and Maxime Blachard, strikers Guy Madjo and Alex MacDonald. Meanwhile Andres Gurrieri was dropped to the bench in favor of Rhys Griffiths.
The home side only making one change from their Johnstone Paint Trophy tie against Leyton Orient, with Holland international player Collins John making his debut for the Bees. There was also Barnet who had a new face on the bench with Edgar Davids being joint head coach at Underhill.
The first half was not even 5minutes old when Argyle took the game to Barnet and found themselves 1-0 up in the first two minutes.  Paris Cowan-Hall a stand out player once again cut back a pass to the oncoming central midfielder Luke Young who then was tackled by Mark Bryne.  The referee Fred Graham pointed to the penalty spot.  Argyle’s current number 10 Rhys Griffiths had stepped up to make it 1-0 by slotting the ball right down the middle of the goalmouth, with former Argyle goalkeeper Graham Stack diving the wrong way.  With the Pilgrims determined to put last weekend poor result behind them, the players were going the right way about it passing the ball comfortable between the back four, midfielders and front men. Argyle were also winning every second ball with Barnet bottom of league two not looking to pressure the defenders, with the bees unable to collect and gather a couple of passes or possession together.  Before not to long Maxime Blanchard had made it 2-0 to the visitors 9minutes after Griffiths had made it 1-0. Hard work from right back Durrell Berry had forced a corner from Jordan Brown.  The in swinging corner came from loanee Alex MacDonald, who earlier in the week extended his loan deal until early December, had found the head of Blanchard who climbed above his marker to convert the ball home into the top corner of the goal.  Things got even worse for the basement club when debutant Collins John was forced off the field of play due to injury with John Oster replacing the international player.  From Argyles 2-0 lead at Underhill, Barnet had pulled a goal back from David Stephens. The goal was a blow for the Pilgrims, being in total control of the game; after Captain Darren Purse had cleared the ball off the goal line into the danger area with Stephens reacting first to convert comfortably passed Jake Cole.  From Barnet pulling the goal back to make it 2-1 they were starting and progressing to pass the ball between themselves and abling their teammates to have a crack at goal.  Somehow for Argyle after starting very positive from the first half whistle the players were second best to everything with the Bees trying and hoping to grab another goal to make it all square at the break.  Fortunately for the Argyle players they went into half time leading 2-1 after the referee had blown the whistle when the 3 additional minutes were up.
Second half was approaching with manager Carl Fletcher making a tactical substitution with Andres Gurrieri replacing Guy Madjo who also extended his loan deal from Aldershot until the middle of December.  The reason why the manager had made this substitution was because he thought Gurrieri would be the player to stick to first half substitution John Oster more than Guy as he was seeing a lot of the ball before half time.  Not too long after half time Rhys Griffiths had the chance to scoring once again after he had got hold of a terrible back pass.  He did the hard thing in going round Graham Stack but unfortunately Rhys had slide the ball into the side netting. Up jumped the 1000+ green army but it was back to the seats for them.  Andes Gurrieri had his first touch of the Barnet football when he unleashed a thunderous shot towards goal.  A double save from Graham Stack prevented him from celebration his second goal in as many games.  Paris Cowan-Hall had made it 3-1 not so long after.  Rhys Griffiths was fouled by the Bees captain Garry Fuller.  Another neat and set piece delivery from Alex MacDonald found Cowan-Hall’s head who fired over Graham Stack and into the back of the net.  The Pilgrims were cruising to a much needed and well deserved three points.  With a two-goal lead going into the final 20minutes Argyle still had to be on the toes and aware of Barnet’s threats.  A goal line clearance from goal scorer Maxime Blanchard when Krystain Pearce headed goal bound.  Another substitution from Carl Fletcher was made with winger Joe Lennox replacing Alex MacDonald, with chants ringing around Underhill ‘sign him up’ whilst he left the field of play.  A straight swap for Argyle.  Moments after Lennox had come on he had a delightful chance to score but a last ditched tackle from Stephens denied Lennox from doing that.  Two of the three minutes of additional time was being played when Argyle were awarded a free kick just outside of the penalty box, young midfield Luke Young curled the ball into the back of Stacks net to make it 4-1 to the Pilgrims, and to also top of a great afternoon for the Plymouth Argyle players, management staff and of course the 1053 fans that travelled to the game.
Barnet (4-4-2): 29 Graham Stack; 2 Barry Fuller (capt), 32 Krystian Pearce, 30 David Stephens, 3 Jordan Brown; 11 Ricky Holmes (25 Jamal Lowe 80), 8 Mark Byrne, 4 Clovis Kamdjo, 15 Andy Yiadom (17 Anthony Edgar 72); 19 Jake Hyde, 36 Collins John (31 John Oster 15). Substitutes (not used): 1 Liam O'Brien (gk), 7 Oliver Lee, 10 Jon Nurse, 26 Elliott Johnson.

Plymouth Argyle vs Aldershot - Johnstone Paint Trophy 2nd Round

Aldershot Town make their second trip down to Plymouth in a number of weeks to face an injury hit Plymouth Argyle side at Home Park.  The first trip was the first game of the Npower League Two season where the Pilgrims were beaten 2-0.

Today however is the second round of the Johnstone Paint Trophy.  Aldershot were victorious over Devon Rivals Exeter City at St James Park, where they nocked 4 penalties past the Grecians to win the game 4-3, after the game had finished 0-0 in 90minutes.  For Argyle they had a bye in the first round competition for both league one and two.  The winners from tonight’s cup game will qualify for the last eight of the southern section.  This will be three games away from Wembley.

Carl Fletcher will be without eight first team players when his side take on Aldershot Town – an early kick-off of 7pm.  This is to encourage younger fans of the green army to come and support the boys and Fletcher.  Jamie Richards will be certain to make he’s football debut tonight.  Fletcher who only has 3 current fit defenders including Jamie is looking to bring in a defender before tonight’s game, with all the injuries and suspensions that are occurring at Home Park.  Also unavailable for this evenings game is Onismor Bhasera, he is on international duty with Zimbabwe, the team are looking to qualify for the African Cup of Nations when they play Angola in the second leg of the qualifier where his team already lead 3-1 going into the game.   Also unavailable for this evening’s cup game are Alex MacDonald and Guy Madjo.  These two players’ loan deals expired after Saturdays defeat to AFC Wimbledon at Home Park.  However Madjo could be making a quick return to Home Park when his team Aldershot Town come to town.   Manager Carl Fletcher will be looking to extend the loan deals of the pair after tonight’s game against Aldershot.

Plymouth Argyle vs AFC Wimbledon - Match Report.

Plymouth Argyle 1
Rhys Griffiths 89

AFC Wimbledon
Byron Harrison 13
Rashid Yussuff 90+2

In Carl Fletchers post match reaction on the defeat to AFC Wimbledon at Home Park, he declared that’s what his team had deserved from the game.
There were 4 changes to the squad that drew away at Wycombe Weonders on Tuesday evening.  In came Paris Cowan-Hall, Luke Young, Rhys Griffiths and Curtis Nelson.  The players to drop out of the starting 11 were ever present Maxime Blanchard who had failed a match-day fitness test due to concussion that he had sustained in the previous match, both Warren Feeney and Ross Jenkins with Groin injuries. Whilst loanee Guy Madjo was dropped to the bench.  Whilst for Wimbledon caretaker manager Simon Bassey, had made one change from there defeat at Oxford United on Tuesday evening.  The player to drop out was Christian Jolly with Rashid Yussuff coming into the midfielder’s position.
The game started very slowly for the Pilgrims who were not their usual selves around the ball, no confidence at all.  The Dons on the other hand knew what their new apponited caretaker manager wanted from them.  Not even 30seconds had passed on the clock when referee Keith Stroud assembled his first bookable offence of the game. The booking was shown to Dons player Yado Mambo after a late tackle on tricky winger Paris Cowan Hall.    Plymouth Argyle who had gone behind early on against Wycombe four days previously had done the exact same against yesterday’s visitors by conceding in the 13th minute.  The goal came from a sloppy touch from Rhys Griffiths who was making his full league debut, presented the ball to George Francomb who ran at Robbie Williams and Onismor Bhasera down the left wing.  He drilled the ball across the penalty box with Jack Midson helping it onto Byron Harrison who touched it home from inches out in front of the Devonport end.  Argyle were 1 nil down.  From that goal it completely knocked believe out of the players who couldn’t bring together a couple of passes between one another.  The Dons players on the other hand were first to every second ball and beaming with confidence, they were after a second but the players stood tall and defended well.  The only really threat from Argyle came Paris Cowan-Hall, running at the opposition defenders when he skipped into the penalty box, it didn’t present the greens anything other than a corner.  Although it did take pressure of the home defenders.  It wasn’t until one of Robbie Williams’s free kicks that tested the goalkeeper Seb Brown. He scrambled the ball away for a corner.  The Pilgrims were slowly improving but it was always AFC Wimbledon on top.  Another right hand cross from Francomb lead to Harrioson heading the football inches wide of the left post with Jake Cole in wonderland.  A lucky escape for the greens.  The fourth official had issued a minimum of 3minutes added time. The pilgrims went in at half time 1 nil down.
The Pilgrims came out ready for the second half early on for their new look warm up with Coach Kevin Nacekivell.  There were no chances for both teams.  For Argyle they would have been looking for an early breakthrough like they have had in their last couple of their NPower league 2 games.  Not long after the second half whistle had gone from the re-start manager Carl Fletcher was going to make a change.  Onismor Bhasera made way for Guy Madjo who was making his last appearance in an Argyle shirt after his loan spell expired.  He now returns to his parent club Aldershot Town who Argyle face in the Jognstone Paint Trophy on Tuesday at Home Park.  An unusual kick-off of 7pm, to encourage more young fans to attend the cup game.  Carl Fletcher is looking to extend the loan deals of Alex MacDonald and Guy Madjo after Tuesday’s game.  If Fletcher had extended the loans before Tuesday the players will be unavailable for the games.  Argyle were playing 4 forwards upfront with the pilgrims formation standing at 4-2-4.    After Fletcher had made that substitution there was a bit more purpose in the game.  They started passing and keeping possession of the football.  Griffiths and Madjo were linking up well with Guy holding the ball up exceptionally well. Whilst Hourihane’s shot was goal bounds with Seb Brown making a good save.  With Griffiths he had the ball in the back of the net.  Home Park went wild.  It wasn’t until the players, management staff and fans realized that the goal wasn’t standing, it had been ruled out for offside. The players ran back to their position on the field and had to regroup to build another attack.   The Dons were about to bring on Huw Johnson for Luke Moore in the 81st minute of the game.  The Pilgrims were fighting for a draw.  Carl Fletcher brought on Joe Lennox and Nick Chadwick.  The players to make way were Durrell Berry and Conor Hourihane.  Alex MacDonald had dropped to right back to fill in Berry’s position.  The formation of play had changed once again with Argyle playing 4-1-5.  The front five players were working there socks off to grab a late gasped equalizer.  The goal had finally come from Rhys Griffiths in the 89th minute. A penalty for Griffiths after Madjo was fouled by Mambo.  The penalty was originally saved from Brown but the fireman placed it into the back of the net after the goalkeeper was unable to keep hold of the ball.  Home Park went wild for the second time.  The goal stood, it was 1 apiece.  The official had added an extra 4minutes onto the 90, but I expect most fans just wanted the game to be over.  Then it was heartbreak AFC Wimbledon were taking 3points back to London after Rashid Yussuff’s defected shot came off Robbie Williams to catch Jake Cole of his line.  It was in the back off the net, and that’s how it finished 2-1 to AFC Wimbledon.

Plymouth Argyle vs AFC Wimbledon - Match Preview

After a mid-week game away to Wycombe Wonders on Tuesday, Plymouth Argyle will return to Home Park when they take on AFC Wimbledon today, Saturday 6th October 2012.  The loan deals of strikers Guy Madjo and Alex MacDonald both end after the final whistle today.  Carl Fletcher will be looking to extend the loan deals for the pair after Argyle have taken on Aldershot Town in the Johnstone Paint Trophy at Home Park on Tuesday Evening a 7pm kick-off.  The reason for this is because Madjo wouldn’t be allowed to play against his parent club and as for MacDonald; he can’t play in any cup games as he is on loan from Burnley. Fletcher has 5days after their loan deals expire to extendthem for after month or longer.

After a change of manager for The Dons-AFC Wimbledon, the players will be looking to impress the gaffer to secure a place in the squad come 3 O’clock this afternoon.

Durrell Berry will be looking to come straight back into the starting 11 after missing the mid-week game at Wycombe because of suspension for picking up 5yellow cards in previous league games.  If this is the case Curtis Nelson who took Durrell’s position on Tuesday will be dropped to the bench.  Ross Jenkins who was brought to Home Park on loan from Watford would be eager to make his home debut against the Wombles this afternoon. Ross was ruled out of last Saturdays 1-1 draw to Southend United through a groin injury that he had picked up late on in last Thursdays training session.  Both Warren Feeney and Guy Madjo will be looking to keep their positions safe after their hard working displays in previous games that have awarded both players with goals.

Wycombe Wonders vs Plymouth Argyle - Match Preview

After putting in an impressive display at home to earn a point against Southend United, Argyle make the long journey to Wycombe for tomorrow night’s fixture at Adams Park. The Pilgrims will also be looking to carry on their 3 game unbeaten run when they take on Wonders.

Since wonders ex-manager Gary Waddock’s departure on 21st September 2012 after a third successful defeat, Gareth Ainsworth was handed the job of care-taker manager.  The team will be looking for their first 3points in six games when they take on Plymouth Argyle at Adams Park.

Gary Waddock will be looking to make a number of changes when he team faces Argyle after their 3-0 defeat to London rivals Dagenham & Redbridge.  After Argyles right-back Durrell Berry picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Southend, he is automatically given a one match suspension. This means he will miss the game at Wycombe.  Curtis Nelson will be the obvious person to step into the right-back position, not his preferred spot as he is a centre-back by trade.  The other possibility for manager Carl Fletcher will be for Onismor Bhasera to drop back into the right back position with the Zimbabwe playing in the heart of midfield for the last couple of games.  Nick Chadwick and Rhys Griffiths will be pushing for a starting 11 place with the players returning from injuries to make comebacks in the Southend United game last Saturday.  Alex MacDonald will be looking to keep his place in the starting 11 after he’s first goal for the Pilgrims came on Saturday with him enjoying his second loan spell at Home Park.

Available: Jake Cole, Rene Gilmartin, Ollie Chenoweth, Darren Purse, Curtis Nelson, Robbie Williams, Maxime Blanchard, Jamie Richards, Alex MacDonald, Onismoir Bhasera, Joe Lennox, Luke Young, Conor Hourihane, Andres Gurrieri, Paris Cowan-Hall, Jordan Copp, Jared Sims, Matt Lecointe, Guy Madjo, Warren Feeney, Nick Chadwick, Rhys Griffiths.

Doubtful: Ross Jenkins (groin injury)

Unavailable: Jed Harper-Penman, Isaac Vassell (both on-loan to Bideford), Jamie Lowry (ankle injury), Paul Wotton (groin injury), Durrell Berry (suspended)
